A middle-aged WASP examines his Life, his heart and his home. Sometimes it all makes perfect sense. Not lately, though.

All My Life's a Circle

All my Life's a circle, Ms J. Or rather a series of circles. I just understood that today. It was an epiphany of sorts. I was standing at the stove this morning, making another macaroni salad for dinner. I put some water in a big pot to boil the pasta and I noticed the oil I'd added had formed circles. I was quite mesmerized by it, Ms Journal. They were circles - perfect circles - of olive oil. I took a picture. Then, I noticed the pot itself. It was a circle too, as was the lid. The spiral heating element on the stove top formed five more circles.

Circles Posted by Hello

As I waited for the water to boil, I put my seedling tomato plants on the front porch to give them some bright sun and to harden them a little in preparation for the final move in a couple of weeks to the vegetable garden. The pots were circles too. So was the bright disc of the sun that helps them grow. I culled the seeds from last years tomatoes, then stored the seeds all winter. From last year's crop, will come this year's crop. Another circle.

Round and round. Posted by Hello

In the kitchen again, I began to think about circles in nature and in my Life. I believe that my essence or soul is pure energy. It has always existed. It will always exist. No beginning. No end. A circle. I thought of the ever-changing seasons and of the ocean tides and the phases of the moon. And of day and night. Rain falls and then evaporates only to rise as cloud vapour and turn again to rain.

They're all circles, Ms J. Loops. They have no beginning and no end.

Today was the day I really and fully understood that concept. And just to make certain I got it, something quite wonderful and unexpected happened.

I was slicing a carrot and really noticing, that is, paying attention to, the perfectly round orange coins as they lay on the cutting board, when a song came on the radio. It was an old song from the 1970's. It was Harry Chapin.

I had no choice but to put my knife down and listen. I couldn't see through my tears.

"All my Life's a circle,
Sunrise and sundown
The moon rolls through the nighttime
Til the daybreak comes around

All my Life's a circle,
And I can't tell you why
Seasons spinning 'round again
The years keep rollin' by."

I'm writing it for the first time this year, Ms J.

I LOVE MY LIFE!!!!!!!!
